I finally freed the 99 impreza body and engine harness from the parts car and have it laid out on my workbench now. My question for anyone who has thinned harnesses before is what is a good way to thin the harness without leaving a ton of dead connection ends throughout the loom and how do you decide if you delete a ground or leave it after removing everything it was originally there for.

The more you can lay it out and leave it that way, the better.

Cut off the old tape and loom. Use little pieces of tape, or zipties to keep the original grouping together to help keep it organized.

Grab a connector you aren't going to use, trace each wire. When you reach another connector, or if the wire splits, cut it off a couple inches short. If the wire splits, but you've already cut the other wire(s), carry on beyond the junction. I treat the grounds the same way, if the wire is a dead end, it gets cut out, but if it's connected on both ends to something that's being used, it stays.

Does anyone know if this key warning unit is critical to allow the car to run? I unfortunately didn't test it while it was still in the car. My understanding is it's part of the security system i'm removing but i would like to avoid a no start immobilizer scenario when this goes into the new car

    Good to know .
So far I've successfully gutted the harness of everything obvious not needed to run or light the car but now i'm down to a few relays, mysterious taped up connectors and one plug for the left knee switch panel that was shoved in a blank...

Wiring diagrams have been helpful but the logic circuits are still meh

No immobilizer on that car. That unit just activates the chime if the key is in and door open. Chuck it!

One more before i forget. How does gf8/gc8s get their speed reading? Ie. Transmission internal gear, wheel speed sensors, etc.

I am deleting the abs on this project but i stopped before clipping the front sensors pigtails

From the transmission. On the early ones it was a cable, on the later ones, a sensor on the transmission. Wheel speed sensors are only for ABS.

Awesome, thanks again! The engine/light harness is going to be pretty thin after this 20210104_141843~2.jpg
