Yeah and the brushes are usually what fails on starters (which is why hitting it temporarily helps, it knocks the worn brush loose and makes contact) so I can't see how auto start/stop doesn't kill starters unless they go brushless motors which I don't think any cars use except maybe brand new ones with the high voltage 48V systems that use combo starter motor/generators instead of alternators.

hmmm, if I knew that I could make it all of the way there...hahaha

It does not have that ridiculous feature. I honestly wouldn’t buy a vehicle with that option. My mom’s Malibu has it and I find it to be super lame and annoying.

Well I have a fantastic update! It appears to be that the new battery and letting the car idle a bit to reset everything has removed all of my codes that were popping up. I was hoping that the low battery was the majority of the issue and it so far appears to have been. We shall see after driving it around a bit. Fired right up this evening when I got home.

So, all good news for now. Now hopefully I can get it in for a tune up soon

You need a voltmeter to check the battery and alternator. Just to make sure that the alternator is actually keeping the battery charged while running.

If that really did fix all the issues then you got a hell of a deal!
Almost as good as when I got a 2001 Honda Civic manual for $300 because the owner thought it blew the engine...when I showed up and saw the alternator belt missing and the AC compressor seized I paid the guy and went and bought a shorter accessory belt for like $5 (without the AC) and fired it up and drove it away.
    The guy was PISSED lol.

It’s weird. I have been driving around all day today. No warning lights, no hiccups, and starts every time. This is a weird that I am grateful for no doubt! Just weird.
Anyways, got the Forester it’s first set of Minnesota plates today! She’s official.

I was just thinking. This thing makes my BRZ feel much-much faster. My conclusion is, buying a Forester= HP GAINZ(on all of your other vehicles). /logic

I had been skipping this thread as I confused the title with the one you started about another camping cruise.

Nice find. Hope it works out for you with no issues...other that the battery.

There is something really liberating about driving a car you aren't anal retentive about (like a rental). Enjoy it.

For real. Our Forester feels like an absolute turd compared to the WRX. As does the Ranger or Civic (my two primary work beaters). Driving any of them for an extended period of time makes the WRX feel like a rocket ship when I get back in it.

Although I appreciate the boosts, I appreciate the NA more. My dream is still to swap a 3.3l SVX motor into my BRZ. And 250whp would be more than sufficient in my 2700lb coupe

We got a Malibu when the wife and I rented a vehicle a few years back for vacation. Hated the cvt and auto start/stop feature on the thing.

We also dumped my wife’s 2016 Cherokee last year that had that feature, which had a button to disable, but you had to do it every time you started the vehicle up. Super annoying, now she has an Ascent and we don’t have to worry about that “feature” ever again.

Mopar stuff you just computer disable that permanently via AlfaOBD. I don't mind the cylinder shutoff thing (4 of 8) but I would disable the complete shutdown "feature".

Really? So a tech is able to toggle that feature off and on? Interesting. I wonder if it legal for them to do so since that feature is linked to CAFE numbers.

AlfaOBD is a app for your android phone, cost $50, then you need a Bluetooth dongle and you can adjust many features and program keys and other modules to your car. I have the app from when I had my ram. I used it to change my headlights from halogen to led so it didn't tell me they were out. I also have some some keys.

The Forester is still firing up every time. And no check engine lights! But, I do feel a little shimmy under load. Trying to diagnose it with my butt dyno/calibration tool. But I am having a hard time pinpointing it currently. Will continue to update!

Decided to put some miles on the Forester around town today. Didn’t take too long to get some lights. The traction control and ABS lights came on simultaneously.

You know it's bad when it even kicks your blinker on... Haha.

On the plus side, you can afford a full tank of gas. That's pretty ballin'.

Well if there's an abs sensor failure, the traction control is going to shut off, so that makes sense.

You has code reader, yes? If not, why TF not?

Not sure if it was asked earlier but can you feel if the tq converter locking up? It’s also not impossible the tq converter could cause a “shimmy” under load depending on what you mean by shimmy haha

I need to take it back out on the highway to test that as I forgot to do it on my St Louis Park trip the other day.
Pulled the new codes and they are the same as the ones in the post with the pics-0741 and 0700

So I took the Forester out again to keep troubleshooting. This time I ran it up through the gears and it seemed to shift 4 times and then clunk/shift when the torque converter engaged. So then I get home and the idle is at like 2200 rpm’s while parked. I shift the car into drive with my foot on the brakes and it started lurching like it wanted to take off. Reverse was the same. Almost the same feeling as when you start a manual car without the clutch engaged, while in gear.

Threw a new code, p0607. ECM malfunction or something of the sorts.

    Thoughts?
