So I bought my 03 WRX and got a warranty with it from (thru bank) 3 year 36k miles. Anyway warranty says i need to do the timing belt with in 5,000 miles of purchase if the car has over 60k and it does at 67k otherwise warranty will nullify itself if i can't prove i have dont regular maint. Anyway how hard is it to do the timing belt on one of these? I am a subbie newbie for now. I am thinking about bringing it in to the walser subaru here in burnsville unless someone has a better place? Thanks all
its hard on ANY car..it requires lifting the motor and taking off that black cap on the front of the engine can be expensive...then on top of that trying to get it on
Becarful with warranty stuff... They will not cover your warranty if its something you did in your drive way.
yeah that's kinda what i was thinking too I am going to look in the manual but when should this get replaced (Mileage) is there a benchmark?
Umm, what? ...and no. you don't need to lift the motor in the wrx. Not even close to accurate. no offense:roll: I'm pretty sure the book calls for the timing belt to be done at 105,000.

i don't really have experience with the WRX i just remember having to lift the motor for my ol legacy Lulz but i know for sure its expensive!

it's actually Dave, Scuba Steve is the screen name. IMHO- I'd call the warranty company to verify what they need. Sounds a bit off that they's request something to be done that not even recommended by SOA. I wouldn't blow off the warranty request especially if you paid extra for it. Dig into it and find out what they need. ____ I have not seen Officer Friendly lately. I'm sure once I do he'll pull me over, I've already planned on it. He is the ONLY EP cop that has ever given me a rough time, otherwise all the rest have always been real cool.

You DO NOT have to lift the motor on a WRX, or any other Subaru I have ever worked on. <- Just like Dave stated. WRX's are a little more difficult than most other subies because the fan shrouds are crammed so close to the timing covers. Best idea would be to remove the radiator and fan shrouds together, and gain a little more working room.
And Brightside, in all honesty, I would go back and get your money back for the warranty you purchased. If the company has no idea of the maintanence schedule, there is a good chance they have no idea what they are talking about (meaning they won't cover a damn thing). Just save the money you spent on it for any repair you may need (if any).
^ Exactly. If you decide to get the timing belt done somewhere, I would not pay over $300 for it. If no other parts are needed, it should not take a competent mechanic more than 2-2.5 hrs to complete. That includes removing the radiator, which takes all of 10 minutes.
yeah I was almost screwed by my extended warranty company on a rear diff. issue until the fine boys at mntka stepped in and slapped the warranty company around a bit.
