First off, my car is a MY00RS. So my car wouldnt go into gear and I thought it was just a bent fork or bad TOB. So today I pulled my motor to change it out. Low and behold a piece off of my transmission bell housing broke off. The picture below where the blue circle is, is where it broke. NOTE: this is not my actual tranny. I just stole it from an old thread on nasioc. Ignore the broken pin hole. My tranny does not have it. There are also no bolts that hold my broken piece(snout) in place like in the background, it is just connected to the tranny. Again the blue line is where it broke and the whole thing came off just leaving the shaft. That piece seems necessary, bc w/o it the TOB would be kinda loose unless I am wrong and it is not necessary. Is it possible to have a good welder, weld it back on? or am I just screwed and need a whole new tranny? Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.
For some reason, It thought that, that piece was removable. As in you could get another one and have it pressed in or something. I would call the dealership tomorrow, and talk to the guys in parts about it. They could get the diagram for sure. Worth a shot atleast. Otherwise the throwout bearing rides on that piece so I am not sure if you could have it welded as the bearing would be rubbing on the weld from time to time which would reduce your bearings life considerably. you might be able to drill and tap some holes and put in one of those bolt in ones like in the picture.
Yeah, that's trouble. That would involve buying new case halfs and swapping over all the necessary parts along with buying new bearings/shims due to the change in depths that are now different from the new case halfs.
There isn't room to add on the stub like the STi trans has on it. The front of the trans in that area is ribbed. They do make some "overbore" sleeves, but if you already have broken off the stem, then it's too late for that. That stem is part of the casting (or the case).
so what my est bet...seems like I am pretty much screwed...i just need the tranny to last until the summer...so is welding out of the question? they have snout repair kits but they sit on the snout that broke. DAMN...
Buy my 2000 RS trans with a broken 2nd gear and swap over parts needed and have it pressed in. Anyone know if this can be done?
Finding a replacement tranny is cheaper in this situation. Forester/Legacy 2.5GT non-turbo/Outback non-turbo are all 4.111 5spds and would be much more ideal. They don't get the hard driving you see in 2.5RSs.
It isn't necessarily a repair kit, but if the snout is worn down, it's more like a shim or overbore stem. They aren't a perfect fix either. I would take Fuji's idea and just try to source a used tranny. One that works without opening up the case halves to swap over parts.
