so i was driving today and while pulling off to the side of the road (slowly) towards my driveway and i dropped my passenger side into the steep ditch. my car was bottomed out on an ice ridge just off the shoulder so i tried jockeying it back and forth(only in 1st and reverse), didnt work. After three times back and forth it felt like the wheels werent moving so i had my buddy tow me out. when we got the car out sure enough i could put it into any gear without the clutch in (with the car on) and it didnt engage. Im thinking its the clutch but what do you guys think?

    BTW its a 96 impreza L with a 5 speed manual

did it smell? usually a clutch problem is accompanied by a pretty nasty smell, and smoke.

so you can put the car in gear with in running WITHOUT pushing in the clutch?
or it operates like usual (push clutch in, select gear, release clutch) but just doesn't engage after that.

You can also check the clutch cable and clutch fork for a positive return. If the fork got stuck or the pivot ball part broke it could something similar to this.

okay so after letting it sit for a day: while running and not pushing the clutch it WILL shift into reverse but none of the forward gears. now idk what to think.
