So I drive a 94 impreza wagon 1.8L with a 5 speed that has been doing some odd things lately. First off, I discovered that I dont need to use my clutch between gears. If I let off the gas and shift as though I usually would (without touching the clutch at all) it works. Secondly, when I am at a stop on a hill I can press the brake, I can let off the brake completely with the car in gear while holding the clutch and I dont roll backwards. Finally, after driving on the freeway for a long while (2-3 hours) I have to take my sweet time between gears or I will hear a grinding noise, even if I push the clutch all the way, its the same sound as you get when you try to put it into reverse while slightly moving forward still I want to say that all of those problems are related to something involving the transmission, but honestly I have no idea, any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks, Kevin
well I guess that depends on what fluid you are talking about, oil: good, front diff: good, coolant: good, and honestly I dont know what all else has fluid in it (I have never owned an AWD car before)
there is a few more, but none really relate to what's going on with your car. it sounds like either A. the trans is shot B. the fluid level in the transmission is low, since they do take like 4 quarts to fill. (and you are pulling the yellow plug on the passenger side of the transmission right) It just sounds like fluids since when it gets warm (extended drive) it doesn't want to shift into a gear without grinding. Might help to try draining and refilling your trans oil, since i don't know how long you have owned the car, and how many miles are on the car/oil. and since you are at that, look under the car and check the rear diff fluid, pull the top plug out (using a 1/2" socket wrench) and feel how high the fluid is.
I also am not entirely sure how long the oils have been there, and if I were to bring it to get an oil change are those levels checked? Sorry if these are dumb questions, I have never had to worry about anything more than oil and power steering fluid :hsugh:
i worked at a local oil change shop in high school, and we never checked trans fluid levels. now i don't know what kind of shop you brought it to, so they may have but i wouldn't bet on it.
