I find that most people did something with their EGT after putting in an aftermarket UpPipe. I want to go the easy. I heard that if you put it back in the aftermarket UP it could blow up the Turbo. After UP installed i need to drive it to have a tune. Will I be safe driving it? What do you guys recommand I do with the EGT sensor?

You don't need the EGT sensor. I would go without one if possible.

The EGT is a little piece of metal that after being heated up a few times can disintegrate and end up in your turbo. Just remove the EGT (its only purpose is to detect exhaust temps and won't affect a tune) and do the resistor fix (you can find the link on scoobymods or Nasioc) and drive on.

You can disconnect the EGT wire from the harness quite easily. Then take it out of the engine bay, do the resistor fix, and go on your merry way. You don't need to worry about doing anything bad to your car without a tune for just an UP. You should get a tune, definitely, but it's not necessary.

Is the factory EGT sensor a K-type thermocouple? I have not heard of issues with these as they are designed for that environment. Mine has been fine for 30k.

A real EGT sensor is a very nice tool for tuning if you have the ability to datalog it.

There ya go. Scroll down halfway for pictures of how the EGT mechanical fix is done.

Basically plug the egt bung hole on the uppipe (if there is one) with a m12 x 1.25 bolt and get the resister from the link above to take care of the Cel.

The resistors cost under $2.00 for 6 at Radio Shack. You don't have to do this if your tuner can simply block the CEL in the map. Just make sure the egt bung bolt is in there tight....;)

Hopefully my thread didn't scare you and that your's is a success from the get go.

There have been some horror stories on NASIOC/other boards about the EGT probe getting sucked into the turbo. I've never personally seen it but since it's not an essential piece of equipment I've always gone with the Keep It Simple, Stupid (KISS) line of modification and took the part off.

Well, the stock egt is worthless (as is most stock gauges), but a aftermarket egt will give you lots of good info. As for the egt breaking off and getting blown into the turbo, never heard of that. Also the myth about removing the cat will cause the egt to heat up si high that it will melt, well that is also a myth. So basically, the stocker is not needed, it will just give you a cell at 1800 degrees.

exactly what i told you. :)

don't need the factory egt set-up. egt will be a great sensor and gauge when you're ready for some serious tuning....then tap it into the manifold for accurate readings...not the up-pipe. I personally like to weld that up-pipe EGT hole shut, but some people prefer to throw a bolt in there....but theres always a very slim chance for that bolt to go buh-bye...leaving you with a leak.
