Well my car is now burning excessive amounts of oil when it is cold out, and also above 5k rpms. I was thinking that this was mostly likely due to worn out piston rings. However fflstixixisiee (however you spell it lol) brought up the point that with piston rings you would most likely see a linear increase in the amount of oil being burned to RPMs. which is not the case. So that leads to the idea it could be valve seals. I have never changed out valve seals before and am curious how hard of a job is it (EJ22E) and about how long does it take? Do I need to pull the motor to do the seals, or can the job be done with the motor still in the car? any other ideas as to what may be causing the oil burning issue? thanks in advance
My guess would be rings before valve seals, do a comp test lately? it may just be only one cyl, that being the reason why it doesnt increase, and the rings sealing up against the walls under higher RPM, ever hear about babied cars making far less HP then cars that were beat on? its all about ring seal.
I havent done a comp test lately. My dad has a tester somewhere I will have to try it. I have also heard of the babied/beat HP difference. My car has 186k on it and I can assure you that atleast 80K of that has not been "babied". I am still not 100% sold on it being rings, even though that was my initial thought. It only smokes at idle until the motor warms up (could be rings), but after the temp needle has started moving it doesnt smoke at all, unless I am getting up in the range of 5k-6k rpms. You would think that a bad oil ring would leave more and more oil on the cylinder walls that faster it is moving, as it has less time to remove that oil. I guess I am just hoping its not rings, as I just had the head gaskets done 30k miles ago and dont really want to pull the motor again.
Valve stem seals would be less prone to being affected by temperature than piston rings. The fact that you said the oil smoke becomes less apparent when the engine warms would lead me to believe that it would more of a ring problem. Maybe time to toss in another 22E?
I am fresh out. I have a 22T sitting on the shelf, well some of it, but I need alot more $$$$ before that will be ready to go in. I have decided the 22T is going to be getting CP pistons.... eventually. I will do a compression check this coming weekend to see if it is only 1 cylinder or all 4.
I have a 22E that has a rusty cylinder or two, and a 25D that may or may not have a knock. Also, lots of used 22T pistons laying around. With all the junk various people on here have laying around, you should be able to cobble something together for cheap.
I know I could but I dont want to. I have decided that when that 22T goes in it will be staying in, that means a WMD proof bottom end. If it is the rings, and I am going to fix it (ie I cant live with some blue smoke) I will pull the EJ22E and have the cylinders honed and put in new rings. But I want to put it off, as I just has the headgaskets done, and will need to put in new ones when I take it all apart along with a new timing belt and water pump (getting close to that interval)
