Turbo shaft play? on a Used VF 39 Mileage unknown, one small crack. Im having it inspected on Monday, before I have it installed at R S. The spindle seems to move back and forth a 1/16th of a inch. Is this normal? I would like to figure it out before install. Lee @ R S Motors said some time you can tell until it on the Car :( I would like to know before that. If its bad I need a differnt turbo in the next 1 1/2 weeks. What are you thoughts?

1st images shows spindle with small side to side movement

    2nd image shows small crack

I don't see it moving at all?

    J/K

did the seller tell you it had shaft play?

is it in and out? or side to side?

the crack could be no issue, or... it could be an issue, and like lee says, you won't know for sure untill it running.

yah PERSONALLY i wouldn't put that turbo on my car then pay for tuning session.:hsugh:

go with your plan, have them inspect it 1st.

vf39 are cheap, you can always get another one....

Which direction does the shaft move? If it moves side to side just slightly, you're probably just fine. If it moves in and out (wiggles hotside to coldside), I'd suggest finding a new turbo.

Also, that crack on the WG is perfectly normal for a VF39. The only thing you want to worry about is if it goes all the way out to the outside of the housing.

Shaft play is a slight 1/16th of a inch side to side, Not in and out. The crack is only visable from the inside and the person I bought is from said he didn't have any problems he just wanted to upgrade, He is on MN subaru and seemed like a real good guy, I just wanted to verify the facts. Thanks guys

Sounds fine all around. As long as you're not planning to run tons of boost (like 25+ with meth or racegas) through it, you should be fine.

also, do you have a restrictor pill for a vf39?

you may need one if you are useing the gm bcs as a bleed style boost control

If he is running the stock BCS, he'll need one that is the correct size for the VF39. If he is running a GMBCS (or any other 3-port interrupt style BCS), he will not need one at all.

Yeah, I'm Using the GMBCS ^ I don't need the restrictor pill? Right!

I'm thinking Ron said boost would be around 18 psi? with regular gas 91-93 octane

it's like hopping on here and asking if the pimple on your penick is ok, or if you should see a doctor,

one guy says let'er buck, anouther says wow you gots teh aids....

I'd lean toward the side of caution.

Did I help you do that? If so, yeah, we removed the pill :). The 3-port BCS acts differently then the stock BCS, so you don't need a pill at all.

I install the gm bcs with new hoses so the restrictor pill gets eliminated.
On the turbo, pull on the shaft litely and try to spin in. You're looking for a spot that would catch and slow or stop the rotation. I've had some stock turbos that felt good on the bench but I knew it was bad. Until I pull the shaft to one side then fell it catch even just slightly.
