Very interesting, From the sound of things the 18g with a larger top mount intercooler is a great way to go especially for top end power all the way to redline (6500K) but you loose a little bottom end? :( The VF43 is a great turbo with a thicker case then the old vf39 less likely to crack were the down pipe connects, But doesn’t climb the as high in the R's as the 18g, So..... Is it possible to keep the torque numbers up and Hp and run a solid amount of boost up to a least 6K and use a VF43 or is that crazy talk :eek4: . Is the best way to make a Subaru fast is to use a Mitsubishi heavy Industries turbo? :ugh: Are there any problems like cracking or shaft in shake that these turbos are prone too? I'm just trying to understand where everyone is coming from I have heard different opinions from other people who like the 18g/vf43 turbo and the best way to determine the best would be a dyno of each. I’m not disagreeing with anyone I just want to do what is best for my Suby. :)

Personally I wouldn't go for the VF43 unless someone gave it to me dirt cheap. I don't know about cracking with them, but it's basically the same as the 39 with a better wastergate design..IIRC.

I don' know personally know of anyone running a tuned 43, but I assume it will still fall short in the higher rpm.

If you're worried about the lag...don't worry. The smaller 7cm hotside of a 18g will still give you good spool.

my 2 cents- Unless you're dead set on 300awhp then maybe consider a 16g evo3. Very quick spool and the ability to push all the way to redline.

Yes, Dave is right. The 43 is the same turbo as the 39 but just with a redesigned wastegate. They're exactly the same size.

From what I've seen, the 7 cm 18g spools better then the 39/43, and obviously can flow more on the top end (600 cfm).

    Heck, I'd throw a 18g with a 7cm on my car without hesitation:yumyum:

Is a 16g a beter turbo then the 18g or 18g w/ 7cm? or just smaller and faster spool up? I would very much like 300 to the wheels, But is there a better goal to go with higher or lower from your experience?

I'm asuming you tune alot of subarus on a regualr basis, This is the best way to go for the money and power? Or if I was to spend more money then more orignal budget of $2500 - $3500 to $4500 is there a beter way to set up the car? My goal is fun whp and tourqe but I also will be using this car as my daily driver and I am hoping to pick up a new sti or some JDM spec subaru in the next 2 years for my spend all my money and loss by butt Car.

Are either of you guys going to be at Firestone tonight? I'm planing on going down there with my wife and 2 kids, My little boy calls every "cool" car he sees a Subaru.

So I have a sti TMIC.

    I Need a 18G New
Im going to get a Cobb turbo back exhaust

and have RS tune the car.

Is there anything else I need?

Stock injecters are fine from my understanding, I think there is a part for boost control I need but I forgot what it is called Dave told me last night a Firestone.

End goal daily drive 300 at the wheels.

Yeah, you seem to have it:

    -18g
    -TMIC
    -Full TBE
    -GMBCS
    -Tune

I'm hesitant to put prices on all of those, because it depends on where you purchase and if you purchase new or used. Also, I realize 300 WHP is your goal, but keep in mind that all dyno's are different and numbers are just numbers.

With that said, with a very good tune, that setup outlined above will net significantly over 300 WHP on a dynojet dyno, and maybe just at or below 300 WHP on a classic mustang dyno.

I think this thread now belongs in the technical section. :)

^ I saw that, I just bought a STI intercooler from John for $225, sweet :)

Thanks, I'll give Joe a call about the 18g, he says its ported and polished and ready to mount onto a wrx is that normal or does that mean it's modified?

I figured this 18g comparo is relevant info to this thread. Not vouching for any of the info, but it's a good discussion.

Can a mod move this thread into the technical section? There's a bunch of good info, and it seems to belong there.

yes, once we're done with the WTB part of the thread I'll throw it all together, clean it up, and then put it in the tech section
