Put on new fuel pump, yesterday I did injectors. Just need to button everything up and get a tune. I asked Santa for a bigger turbo this year hopefully he comes through.
Technically a couple days ago, but I "fixed" the gaping hole in my LR strut tower with some black "pond" spray foam and an old Rally Armor mud flap, with the assistance of some self tappers. Just make it through the winter, baby...
Pulled off intake manifold to replace gaskets because I "thought it was the injectors". Sometimes you have to "break" things to get your wife to let you buy parts. I'm thinking of painting the manifold but I'm also impatient and really want to drive this thing? What do you guys think?
Started parting the 99 OBS since the warm weather melted some structural ice. Car is on the verge of folding in half.
As I mentioned a few posts up, my LR strut tower in my "daily" is not pretty. The rust hole got massive when I was kinda picking at it and I also noticed a big crack in what's presumably the main structure of the strut tower. Definitely beyond justifiable repair at this point, so just gonna close my eyes and cross my fingers and see how long it lasts I guess. Kind of a disheartening discovery cuz I didn't think it was nearly that bad yet. Time to start looking for a worthy replacement I think because it's only a matter of time now.
Decided this weekend that it is time to sell my ‘04 FXT. It’s a nice car and all, but has never been what I wanted it to be. I should have kept my old STi. It’s weird to say this, but I replaced it with an ‘04 CTS-V. It was a great deal, I hope. 66K miles, 6MT, super clean, Corsa exhaust, Forgestar wheels (and originals for snow tires). Thankfully, I still have 2 Subarus in the garage yet. So, coming soon, a FS ad!
Brought my '06 2.5i in for an airbag recall. Meanwhile, got to use a 2020 Impreza. Actually pretty nice. Not ready to give up on mine yet though.
Had some nice photos taken. Haven’t gotten them back yet, but here’s screenshots of an unedited preview!
SokieTech hood struts installed today. They are about the same height as the prop rod. I really wanted the GS ones, but couldn't get past the price.
If you were wondering. A '00 Forester hood will fit in the back of a '00 Outback wagon 2020-12-22_04-28-03 by Numbchux, on Flickr

Here's the gear oil that came out of that diff: 2020-12-28_10-48-06 by Numbchux, on Flickr And it wasn't even a VLSD, this was an open diff! Swapped the old-but-still-good GR2s from the white car with the blown struts and cut springs on the red, and some half-decent Pirelli no-seasons from the silver car, and took it for a drive. Car drives very nicely with good suspension and matching tires, but the rear diff HOWLS on decel. So I'm looking for a 3.90 rear.
If it's not dark later tonight I'll take a picture of it. But it's just these, but in ridiculous quantity. https://www.badgeofownership.com/UI/dist/
Remarkable how straight they were able to get them all. If I had tried to do this they would all be askew. How is it that it was their 4th and 5th subaru
Finished up swapping out the rear diff in that Forester in the wee hours this morning (baby was sleeping sideways in our bed....I decided to get some work done). Some more carnage from it starting on fire. Plastic breather gone: 20210116_155744 by Numbchux, on Flickr Mounting bushings scorched (most of the deformation was from air-hammering them out, but you can see that the rubber was on fire) 20210116_155758 by Numbchux, on Flickr Anyway, got a "new" 3.90 (this Forester was 5MT swapped from an '03 Impreza) rear diff from a '97 Impreza. Put some new side seals in it, and some Powerflex poly rear bushings and swapped it in. Took it for a short test drive, and all seems to be well.
Today I pulled one intake manifold, 2 radiators, intercoolers, basically everything that sits on top of the block. I'm getting ready to pull the motor on this flaming pile to put the motor from my totaled wrx (rear end damage) in. Got a lot of work done today surprisingly, also it's my birthday and I didn't have to go to any family dinner so that's good. It was a good day, but there is still so much work to be done.
Drove the Frankenforester to work today: 20210129_101826 by Numbchux, on Flickr Drives really nice with some decent struts/tires on it!
Turns out there's cardboard in the driveshaft of a 99 outback sport. Pushed the rear half of the car into the garage to finsh disassembly, front half will probably be this weekend. Also finally sold the veloster yesterday. Not immediately sure what will replace it. Practical cars might be a 2011ish sti wagon or a is300 sportcross. Impractical cars might be a 911, lotus or supra. Gave up on the truck idea when I decided the fastback will be my last overhaul project.
