Finally took the snows off today. Last summer after acquiring this Forester I ran these WRX wheels that I had on it. I got them a little over 3 years ago from someone on here and they were already 7 years old at that point. I put em to use a couple times at Powercruise and over the last couple summers, but they've definitely seen better days. Unfortunately they were also a little too small for the Forester and it ended up cruising at a little higher RPM at highway speed than I liked.

Long story short I scored a pretty sweet pair of lightly used Falken's (from at least the current decade...) on marketplace Thursday night and got them mounted yesterday. Slightly taller. No cracking. More better!

Oh I could drive one of these. I just got a Forester XT but could use more towing power. Balancing the drive to work vs utility. I do have a trailer.

So unfortunately the other day during the storm I had a good size branch fall on my carbon duckbill and break it. So I had to take it off, well for the life of me I can't get the 3m tape off. I've tried 3m adhesive remover, and a heat gun and no luck. Anyone got any ideas?

Get the rubber wheel. Removes gunk and tape and stuff.

As suggested, the eraser wheel is a pretty slick option. Put it in a drill and go nuts. Only thing to keep in mind is you don't wanna just hold it in one place too long or you could burn through the clear. And everyone knows how durable Subaru's clear coat is to begin with.

Hence me recommending the WD40. I have burned some paint in the past with the rubber wheels. They do work awesome though if you don’t do any damage! lol

Finally got around to doing the carbon cleaner in the '15 XT.

I got the tool from Subaru to do this. Worked great. Stunk super bad. The bottle was apparently an odd size and doesn't fit the tool. Oh well. Just put it in the bottle and propped it in a box. Did fine. The bottle emptied pretty quickly. Less than 2 minutes. Then the car died when I tried to increase the RPMs. Had to hold the gas pedal down while trying to start for a while. That cleared it up. It started fine and then revving it pushed a huge stinky cloud out. Cleared up almost completely after a few minutes of up and down on the RPMs. Almost immediately idles better. Took a drive and it was great. Now that I have the tool, probably be doing this annually. The bottle of carbon cleaner isn't very much.

Replaced the suspension on my Outback. Strut plus version is really easy to work with.

Lesson learned, don't follow the guide that says use a large pry bar to get the rear suspension out and the new one in. It's so much easier to just drop one of the control arm bolts to the subframe instead near the differential side. I used my jack to prop up the control arm and align it again when reinstalling the bolts.

Did the same to the wife's Escape a couple days ago. Now the effing TPMS light is on (again). When I had new sensors put in with the new snow tires (old sensors were 10+ years old) Discount Tire could not clone them so that the car would recognize either set of wheels/tires. My first set was cloned and the seasonal swap was flawless with no issues. I hate going to the local DT as they are always so effing busy this time of year and the parking lot is packed and the line at the inside counter is long.

I got rid of the Infiniti a month ago and got a 2025 Dodge Durango with a NA V8, no auto stop/start shenanigans, and a button to permanently turn off the cylinder deactivation feature. Hell yeah, 14 MPG! I drive only about 4k miles a year, so being able to burn regular rather than premium, my fuel costs should be lower than with the Q50 despite the $h!tty mileage. No winter tires for this car since I rarely if ever have to venture out in bad weather anymore...it just isn't worth the expense.

I do have a set of 18 x 8.5 Enkei wheels/Pirelli winter rubber (run flat) with a 5 x 4.5" bolt circle (+38 offset) clogging up my garage if anyone is looking for a deal for some other car in their stable (pretty sure they don't fit any Subaru, but what do I know).

For what it’s worth, he got to see me put these personalized plates on every one of these cars, except for the last one. He was one of the best people that i have ever had the privilege to call friend.

Nope, I’ve had 7. But only the “daily’s” have had those plates. The race car, outback, and forester have just had standard plates

I feel like a plain black plate surround would look best(without the white writing). Been thinking about Sharpie-ing out the white on the Grimmspeed surround. The white around the outside edge of the blackout plate is too contrast-y to me. But I do like them!

Get yourself some silicone license plate frames. Pretty cheap on Amazon and they make the black plates look a lot better.

Well changed out my mid pipe today, finally got someone to reply to me. Forgot to get a pic of the OEM XT mid, has a huge resonator in it, made it so quiet. Now with the WRX mid, sounds much better.

Did an outer tie rod end recently in the Forester. Got it as close as I could based on the positioning of the old one, but it resulted in the steering wheel being off a little bit. Made an appointment for an alignment but still wasn't satisfied with driving like that for a few days so when I had some time I took enough back apart to get an extra turn out of it. Ended up getting it almost spot on. Yeehaw.

However, when I was in the garage for the second time I figured I'd do an oil change at the same time because I already had the car up in the air again. Everything went smoothly (as it should...) until I put the first 4 quarts of new oil in. Not long after I noticed a new wet spot on the floor and it looked like new oil... Slid back underneath to find it dripping off the bottom of the valve cover.

    IMG_20251215_193054569.jpg

I'm assuming the crack was already there and then the big chunk broke out in the process of taking it out for troubleshooting. Thank god I have a collection of dead engines laying around in the garage.

It really can't ever just be easy... Haha.
