Got a custom 3" mid/Y pipe made and installed on the car, and ordered new plugs for it. Perrin single cat downpipe arrived.

Got the rest of the car back together after some fail safe duct tape on my intake blocking off the bypass valve only to find out the starter took a crap! Also replaced some vac lines.

Yesterday: Changed the fuel filter and then decided to start off my long list of to-do's with a compression test.

135-150 psi cylinders 1-3. 15 psi Cylinder 4. Guess the CEL misfire codes were right - I was willing to bet it was really something in the exhaust line, O2 sensors or the cats.

Skipped the rest of the things on the to-do list. Might skip the leakdown test, too. I figure it is likely the valves. As long as I have to do those, I might as well pull the engine to inspect the pistons/cylinder walls and refresh 'em since I am just shy of 143k on my 02 wrx. Other chance is the head gasket, but given the age, still might as well do the refresh.

Guess I have some researching to do and then some decisions to make. Ah, the fun.

BP 93 E10 unless I am traveling, then I get whatever I can find closest at the BP I can find. But I have only had the car since 103k miles, so I can't speak to the previous two owners.

I haven't burned any oil in almost 2 years running Amsoil ASL (5w30 - the long, long life stuff) with 5k between changes. Blackstone Labs did some oil analyses for me and other than a very slight bit more iron and chrome than usual, everything was good including having more life left in the oil. I haven't had a UOA done since August last year though.

I did brief Seafoaming through the BPV line the last couple oil changes and was thoroughly disappointed to have an almost non-existent smoke show. Maybe I didn't leave it in there long enough, or maybe the engine really was fairly clean.

These are reasons I am thinking that it is a valve issue. Car still drives well and runs fine on the highway, just idles with a slight lope. And off and on flashing CEL. (Not running at all now - parked in the in-laws driveway partially dis-assembled while I ponder my course of action.)

Lastly, in case SubyTek happens across this: No, I didn't get the Valve Clearance done at 105k. I thought it was gonna be done but the shop hadn't scheduled the time or quoted it. And I hadn't yet gotten it done after that. So, totally my bad. Mea maxima culpa.

what does a vavle clearance check cost for one and should it be done at 105k regardless of the year of car.

Check the maintenance schedule for your specific car. I would assume it is the same for all the Subarus, but that is only an assumption.

To do a Valve Clearance Adjustment you need to remove the Valve Covers (the other side of the heads from the engine shortblock). Not having done it myself, I will hazard to say it is a step or two past the amount of dissassembly necessary for a Spark Plug change and a Compression Test. Since there are two heads on Subarus this close to doubles the amount of labour involved. I think last time I inquired I was told it was in the $300-$400 range. Cheaper than the work that could result from ignoring it, though.

Check with the Morries Minnetonka boys for more accurate info.

Made a list of what I need to do on the cars... Time for the 105k maintenance on my wrx (timing belt, etc etc), and my wife's car decided to start leaking from the cam seals, transmission, driver's side axle boot and gas filler tube... Looks like I'll be going to Morries for some parts next week. Or, maybe parts for my car and a new(er) car for my wife?

Yep, a burnt exhaust valve happened to be the culprit on mine. Almost together now though!

On another note, strapped the head back on the car. Now need to clean the valve covers and put the timing belt on tomorrow and drop her in! I miss my subie so much :( Money had me down for about a month and a half.

Picked up the 2.2L parts from the machine shop. Two exhaust valves had to be replaced but now the heads are rebuilt, adjusted, and ready to go. The deck is flat on the heads and the block and everything is polished and new looking.

Time to start reassembly this weekend.... then it will be time to tear into that auto and replace the front diff.
