I drove to work, parked, worked for 9 hours and when I returned to my car and put it in reverse, it felt like the ebrake was on until something 'broke loose'. It felt like the axles or something was frozen. Brake pads to rotors or something? Everything was fine after that.

It was an un-nerving sound. Can anyone shed some light?

mine does that all the time when it has been snowing and i have been driving with spirit...

WORST noise my car makes on a semi regular basis.

i believe heat from brakes and the melted snow in the area refreeze and make that happen. never had it happen on any other type of car though...

    it sucks regardless.

Yeah, it's an awful sound, just awful.

    It doesn't sound harmful though.

    Anyone have any more info?

Snow in the wheels. Happens to me all winter. Really bad up at the Orr ice races if you don't clean them out. The snow builds up while driving "spiritedly" then freezes hard after things cool down. Then you try to drive off and the brakes hang up and break off the frozen stuff.

^^^ oh yeah, heard that noise a bunch of times the last day and a half... not a big deal, snow in the wheels freezes on the calipers, happened on my infinity all the time too, sounded exactly the same, never experienced any damage it just sounds bad

I drove up steep hills with enough snow on them a normal car would get stuck if it were flat. I love my subaru on blazzaks in the snow. It's like that car commercial were all the other cars are still and the one car is driving through them.

I thought it was the e-brake that freezes. I put my e-brake on every time I park and today was the first day I've heard mine pop. Do you use the e-brake every time you park?

i have an auto so i dont use my ebrake and it still makes the sounds alot.

i agree that its the calibers freezing to the snow in the wheels.

I do, but it sounds like it's the calipers. Anyway, thanks for the answers fellas, I'll sleep more soundly tonight knowing I'm not alone. :ugh:

Yeah, mine was a bit frozen this morning. It's either the e-brake, iced rotors, or both. It doesn't hurt anything. Just gotta give a bit more gas to break it lose.

    Sweet looking grille!

My brake light came on yesterday. It normally does this every winter, I think it is related to the drop in temps and the pressure in the brake system but I have no clue. It does not affect braking, just the light comes on.

Also I got a big heavy box in the mail today ;-)

picked up the shortened driveshaft. pulled the trans. pulled the trans apart. oogled at the missing teeth on the #2 driven gear. hmmmm.....must be why every other H6 subie made after this was only available with an auto......

went to drop the impreza internals into the XT6 case......hmmmmm....1-2 shifter fork is slightly smaller. just studied the FSMs, and am off to try to swap them. good thing I have a couple EJ donors, so I can experiment on how they go apart without worrying about screwing them up.

    rally rally rally

Took my wrx onto a barely plowed seasonal road tonight, the beginning was fine, then they must have started to bring the blade up because it got deeper and deeper until I got stuck from bottoming out the chassis. Had a hell of a time getting it turned around to go back, had to use the floor jack (yes I brought one for this reason) to jack up the car and scoop snow from under it. The snow was soft enough to sink into and heavy enough to really put a lot of drag on each wheel and the underbody. Overall I though the subaru did a great job making it through some deep sections I though for sure we were going to get stuck in but didn't, which made it a very fun trip.

ps, I was trying to find one of the lspr stages after it has snowed 2.5-3 feet in the last week, didn't make it.

Drove to work with vibrations coming from the front when going over 40mph.

Had to chip out a bunch of ice/snow that was frozen to my wheel, much betta!

Note to self....clean wheels after shenanigans :hsugh:

I found that out last Xmas while driving to my parents... something did not feel right at all and was making a hell of a sound... Parked it in their heated garage for the time i was there and it was all better driving home.

The snow was up to the bottom of the doors. Plus the tires suck on there right now. Didnt realize it was that deep, otherwise i would of got a head start going thru it!

pulled the pedal assembly (huge bitch with the roll cage btw). next I have to finish pulling the brake booster. we're deleting the booster and modifying the pedal to have more leverage. I also installed a schroth harness on dave's side of the car to replace the crow.

I found somebody had kicked out the headlight and bent the fender. There were 3 other cars that had busted taillights too. Stupid kids and their stupid need to vandalize things. Seriously, show some respect for peoples stuff.

wouldnt no brake booster make braking fairly hard, even with a little added leverage to the pedal?

Brought my car into Lexus to get the oil changed (And a carwash and a good thaw) after plenty of parking lot mayhem.

The tech said: "Dude, there was snow EVERYWHERE! I've never seen a car so packed with it. Where the hell did you go?"

harder for sure but remember this is a dedicated race car so it really doesn't matter since adrenaline makes it almost irrelevant. there is actually a factory group n brake booster delete just fyi

Ran the STI thu the car wash and cleaned her up for her long winter slumber. I did however take her out for a rip in the snow before putting her to bed. I should have plenty of time to do a break job, and hopefully a turbo back exhaust.:slayer:
