Just had a scary moment - drove about 2 miles to the store. Driving back I rolled up to a stop sign, car in 2nd gear, clutch in. As I go to make a right hand turn, still in 2nd, the power steering goes out and the oil light comes on? I am in the middle of the intersection so everything was kind of a blur and I wasn't thinking clearly. I do not remember or know if I simply stalled the car. I wasn't panicking but more like WTFFFF. I turned the car into the off position, started it again and everything was fine. I drove about .25 miles back to my apartment and I'm now dumbfounded. I immediately checked the oil and it was just above the L marker. I checked again just now after about 15-20 minutes of being parked and it's now about 1/3 between L and F. I also got a flash light and looked around a bit, no evidence of an oil leak, although I wouldn't necessarily know where to look. Does anyone have any ideas? What sort of things with regard to power steering system/belt/resevoir should I check? I'm thinking I'll check the oil again in the morning, refill it if it needs some and then reevaluate. I am borderline needing an oil change in general, maybe 500 miles over. This is very bad timing as I am about to make a 1800 mile road trip.
OK I checked the power steering assembly and nothing appears out of order. There were no bubbles in the reservoir and the level is adequate. This is really making me nervous.
Did just the oil light come on? Or did other dash lights come on too? Kinda sounds like you either stalled it or bumped the key and turned the car off. Oil level sounds fine. Also, something something rolling through a stop sign in 2nd and not coming to a complete stop
Skipping or broken accessory/serpentine belts like to make accessories fail and lights go haywire. Did you lose engine power as well or just power steering and oil light?
Honestly I don't remember. I made the turn, steering got heavy, I stopped immediately. There were a lot of people behind me so I just restarted and got the hell out of there. I should also note that there isn't currently an AC belt on the car. My Ac compressor froze so it shredded the belt and I haven't fixed it yet.
