So I am doing a wheel bearing on my legacy. The old one pretty much fell apart. Here is the problem I am having. There really is not a good way to describe it so bear with me...

On the wheel bearing there is 2 inner races and one outer race. One of the inner bearings rests closes to the lug studs and the other farther away. The close one sits fine and got pressed in fine. The far away one has play in it. I can slip the race on and off(the old one which is the same as the new one but seperate). There is alot of play. It looks to us like the old race wore into the shaft that it is sposta sit on. But the way it wore away is too perfect for me to believe that thats what happend. So my question is, Should the far away race have play in it? I assume not but you never know. So Tomorrow morning im going to hit up U pull and pick a spindle up unless the play in normal. PLEASE HELP ME!

does it tighten the play down once the axle is through and the nut torqued down?? trying to picture it in my head but I assume it would pull the axle into the back of it and press it together with the nut and washer and axle... kinda sandwich??? as for play..not sure what is an allowable amount

the axle will pull the 2 inner races together. so that's normal.

when you put the axle through and tighten the nut down, it will pull the 2 inner races together. And because they're tapered bearings, this means it will fit nice and snug and there won't be any more play.

this is why you cannot drive without the axle through the bearings. it's a crucial part to hold everything together.

    this is assuming:
the bearings were installed in the knuckle correctly.
you're talking about the '98 LGT in other posts
and you're talking about the front (I haven't had the rears apart....although theoretically the same would hold true there too.)

this is all information that allows us to help you better. which is important when you've got a major issue.

    That info is all correct.
When I say play tho I think you are thinking that the 2 inner races are not touching but that is not my issue. My issue is there is a gap inbetween the inside of the inner race and the shaft on the hub(piece with lug studs). Thank you for you help so far.

the inner races should fit pretty snugly on the hub when fully seated.

try putting the axle through the bearings (without assembling anything else) and seeing if that snugs things up before you go buying new parts.

You can pull out the inner races with the bearings on a brand new bearing, if it is the tapered roller bearing style. Without a hub to support them, they will have some "play".

OK, I drew a picture to maybe try and help. Pretend you are looking straight down onto the hub where the inner race mounts to. The red is the hub and the black is the inner race and how it sits on the hub. Notice the gap in the 2nd one. that is what mine looks like. No matter how much you try and seat it that gap will never get any smaller. The picture on the left is how (i assume) is sposta sit. Sorry for the quick pic its 3 AM and I have to get up early for the junk yard.
