Why and from where might this gas be leaking out of my RS?

    Hey folks.

2001 Subaru RS. Came out this morning to a nice smack in the face of gas fumes rising up from my driveway.

It dripping from the top of the tank right in the middle of the front of the tank. So, I can't really see where it's dripping from except that it's above that lip that encircles the tank.

So, any usual suspects? Are there any seams on the tank that may have split? (I'll just spot weld em shut :ugh: ). Could it be something with the pump, hose come loose?

It's been dripping a good amount. This is from like 15 minutes, but with the back wheels up on ramps:

I put the front wheels up on ramps and it doesn't drip, so that's how she's parked for now.

Figure I'll take it to a shop, but was wondering what the possible causes may be .

I would check the lines on top of the tank.

I think you can pull the back seat, and see the sending unit which would be right there. there is an access panel to remove under the seat

Ya, I know where that panel is, I'll have to take a look. It also leaks at steady rate whether the car is running or not.

I can't find where my leak is coming from. Looks like it's coming from the gas filler neck on mine, but it seems fine. Not from the fuel pump assembly either.... only leaks when you turn the car on the the fuel line is pressured. Stops leaking after the car is off for a while as the pressure resides.

fun game!!! ..yet scary and flammable.

lol, not so fun when you're under the car and gas is dripping on your face, heh.

I couldn't see anything leaking through the access panel. Took it to a shop, they couldn't see either without dropping the tank. Got quoted 5 hours and change to R&R the tank. AWD, do you know what Morrie's book's a tank R&R at?

dropping the tank isn't terribly hard but man is it a crappy job! I'd never do it on an older car.

it seems like a pita, and were it a month or two from now (planning to pull all the suspension and put in softer springs) I might have tried it myself, but this week is a big server migration at work and .. well .. it seemed like leaking gas shouldn't wait too long, heh.

Did you pull the jet pump/sub sender access panel and look from that side?

My rs was dripping fuel at one point and it turned out to be a couple pin holes in the filler neck. I took it off and wrapped it with a good amount of gas tank sealer and it's been good ever since.

fyi, if you do decide to replace the filler neck, a wrx one will fit, but you'll have to kink it and it's kinda a pita...wouldn't recommend it.
