i have a low profile wing, and i just never thought it looked right on my wrx... i def don't like the no wing look. a subaru just doesn't seem like a subie without a wing...

so, what are all your opinions? why do people want to go wingless. why do people have the sti wing. does the sti wing interfer with the rear view mirror looking out backwards?

lucky for me, a forum members friend just got a sti and we will be swapping my low pro wing for his sti wing.

So, is it really that simple to swap wings? i saw 4 bolts on the trunk hinges. two "grounding" wires it seems, and the electrical plug for the brake light. do we simply unbolt and slap on new lid? the electrical plugs should be there in both wings correct?

    thanks all...

I believe your WRX MY in Japan (MY 00-01 STi) came with the USDM WRX wing, or however you wanna look at it.

    Oh and swap trunk springs.

One of the springs can be a pain, I cant remember which one. Might be the STi because its a heavier spring.

Can anyone confirm that for me?

I think subaru people are trendy, that being said, I like the wingless look.

    I think it looks cleaner

    attracts less police attention

less people try to reace you at stop lights

    Just a few.....

I like the STI wing myself, but its not THAT easy of a swap, there are bolts that are used all through the middle of the wing, either you'll have to take all those studs out or drill holes in your decklid.

do i need to swap springs.... i could understand if i didn't have a wing first off, but since i already have one, wouldn't they have accounted for the added weight?

i also realize we need to swap locks, but how about hinges/latch?

and thank you all for your comments!

you will most likely have to swap springs, otherwise the sti springs really..."spring"
If you swap the whole trunk, yes you will have to swap locks.

It's a lot easier to swap trunks rather than wings (17 or so hole for the STi wing vs half a dozen for the wrx.)

When swapping trunks, you'll want to swap springs since the STi winged trunk is significantly heavier. You'll also want to swap lock cylinders obviously.

The STi wing does interfere a bit with your view. Depending on your seating position, it may cut off the roof line of cars behind you... dunno why people still go for the wingless look... kinda played out. It does look good on the bugeye, but that's about it imo.

I think so. I still lol everytime I see Tangled's bugeye with the wrx 3rd brake light in the rear deck and the integrated 3rd (4th) brake light in the STi wing... not as bad as a wingless STi with stock blank rear deck and no 3rd brake light tho...

I liked my wingless for a while. It's a little different for the 06-07 to me since the front end is so over-designed compared to the back half... wingless just looked really lopsided on that car.

The STI wing is too much of a boy-racer look for many people. Ricey, in other words.

Too aggressive and attracts too much attention.

But, I have a wagon, so take my opinion for what it's worth...

haha but really, I like my wingless '07. Although if it would've come with a wrx/STi wing I probably wouldn't have swapped it for wingless.

At least it's functional... but yeah, agreed.

I really don't like wingless on an 06-07 (non-limited) STI. Looks really weird with just the roof vane back there.

well, as a wingless MY 06' owner, I went wingless, and I think the car looks more muscular, it acsentuates the fender flares (with my graphic) it looks real swell...

the fender flares on all four corners scream "I'm allwheeldrive all the time bitch" and with the chip, or sti spoilers it draws more attenetion to the "somewhat functioal" wing.
That draws attention from the incredible body lines that make it eveident that your car is not just pretty, it means business.

^Ding ding - we have a winner. That is my take too. I don't even like the wrx wing so it is gone. I like looking out the rear window without obstructions. Wingless AND badgeless is the played out look.

IMHO I think that the STi wing on the USDM Bugeyes throws off the balance (in terms of looks). Thats nothing that an STi hood scoop for the Bugeye couldn't fix though. But personally nothing beats the sexyness of a wingless debadged trunk lid. I love how the trunk lids have that little crease near the top of it...yummm

The picture shows testing done at 100mph. Slower than trap speed.

Some other tests have shown the 06-07 STI wing to start creating usable downforce at closer to 50mph(?). Pretty damn decent considering how far off the roofline it is.

Prodrive did some testing on the wrx too... Pretty neat stuff that interests me, but irrelevant to daily driving.

edit: haven't see any tests like this (wind tunnel, etc) done on an 06-07 winged STI with front lip, but I'm sure it'll change the front/rear ratio dramatically. Hell, I could feel a difference on the highway... alright enough thread-jacking from me lol

this is not thread jacking, I think you are explaning why a "racerboy" spoiler makes sense, and I like your reasoning, I did not know that it produces so much down force!

(hey, if you would have had that down force do you think you wouldn't have lost it when dodging the "sqirrel"?

lol, appropriate tires would've been great too.

If you are interested in subaru and the amount of R&D they put into aero, take a look at the XT and it's landspeed records. Also take a look at the jdm STi's underbody panelling.

I like all three of the looks thats why I bought a wrx winged trunk instead of trading for my STi one. wingless is just a matter of covering a few holes from the wrx wing(kinda ghetto I know) Its nice knowing I can keep up with all the trendy kids now without trading a regreting it later.

Meh... i like the look of no spoiler... sticks out less.
and for my purposes... a wing that low is kinda dead weight.

i may ad a giganto roof level spoiler if i feel the need, but other than that... not really a big deal.

I guess. For all the road racing I have done I have never seen a wing that does much when its not taller then the roof.

yeah, I mentioned that. Kinda the point of the roof vane. You're right tho, still not as good as one pulling clean air.

wow! one question results in a HUGE discussion! i like it!!!

so..it seems the general consensus that the sti wing is OUT and the low pro or wingless is the winner! yet, i see soo many sti wing'd cars on the road, no one on here likes them?

anywho.. i guess i love it, so thats why i am getting it. i think it finishes the look of a WRX!

im exited to get mine tommorow. will post up results!

I like the STI wings. That, and the fender bulges, are the ONLY attractive features of any (USDM)Impreza newer than 2001, IMHO.

GC/GM-era (pre-bugeye), I think the V4/V5 wings are "a bit too much" without the 22B-style widened fenders + spats to go with it.

I like the wing on mine; it blocks headlights that would normally be reflecting right into my eyes, so I never actually have to use the "nighttime-dim tilt" on my rearview mirror.

i have auto dimming on my sti and i could probably go without the wing. the wing came with the car and it is swiss cheese under it, so it stays for now.

<<this guy has the first wingless BD legacy in Minnesota!

Thats why I did it. And because the band wagon told me to:(

The boys are right it puts a clean finish on the cars and makes them look a little more sophisticated. If you are going for the Sti bugeye look sweet. However you may want to consider adding an 04-05 wrx scoop to even the balance out little. But my personal thoughts are that you will regret it a few months down the line. And trying to swap an Sti trunk is fairly hard to do with the new fad in place but gl none the less and I bet its gonna look great!!
