Yeah, you are reading a thread about wipers. :eek4: I got some new blades since mine were sucking major at cleaning the windshield. I noticed as I took mine off of the 05 STi---maybe its the same with all Subaru's...I don't know, but there is like this odd plastic/metal attachment on the drivers side wiper. I saw no place to screw this to the new ones, as I imagine this thing was made by Subaru--it looks almost like something for weight purposes to bring it back down or maybe a messed up looking plow for snow.

My question. What is the purpose of that extra thing? I can't imagine that these are the original wipers on this car, so it makes me wonder if the previous owner kept getting special wipers from the dealership or something. I doubt its anything too important, but I am curious what it is for.

I have a 99rs and my wipers have it too. It's ugly but I'm not sure what it's for...
I heard it's for snow or ice.

Are you talking about the wiper wing? A lot of cars have them. They're supposed to add some downward pressure to the wiper at speed.

that makes sense... so, where do you get new ones with the wing, because I believe the wing thing says Subaru on it. I never thought of having to order something so small and dumb from the dealership...

Huh, when replacing the blade, that piece came off? It was attached to the 'wiper arm' and stayed there when I swapped the blades out last on my car.:dunno:

Can you post a pic or diagram of this piece? the wiper wing is suppose to remain on the wiper arm as Josh said. That is part of the car and not something to be replaced with every wiper change. I think you may be refering to a different part.

the part was just attached to the wiper blade. I bought a set of Bosch blades that have the rubber wiping piece. everything you buy comes with the blades these days. I haven't seen just the rubber replacements in quite some time--last time I tried to slide one out, it ended up tearing or something. the only thing that is part of the car and fixed to the car is the mechanical arm that the blade attaches to. I will try and get a pic up of mine or something like it from searching online.

hmmm, I may have to hit that store again and check it out. I didn't see them the first time. maybe when it comes time for winter blades I will get some winter refills and put the other things back on.

i have that on my car. it is a way to have to purchase wiper inserts from a dealer. i work at a toyota dealership. now toyotas don't hace the little wing but is a little cheaper to purchase inserts. however i am not sure that there are any aftermarket blades that have that wing on it. another dearler specific part.

this is not mine exact wiper, but its damn close. you can see the thing at the bottom, and it is attached the the removable blade...not the arm. I believe it says subaru on it. the wiper blades when purchased also come with the rubber "refill" already on them. I didn't see just the refills, but I guess maybe I wasn't looking for them alone. the part in this pic is pretty much like mine and almost the same shape.

you probably swapped just the plastic refills and not the blade. the blade is that flexible framing that holds the rubber, and it clips to the moving arm.

SOME of those attach to the BLADE and not the wiper arm. 06/07 STI I know they do that.

Yeah if you just get a new insert you can keep the plastic shield thing, If you replace the whole wiper but want the plastic shiled on there you need a wiper replacement from the dealer. The driver one with the shield is like $30

My 05 STi is like that too

cool...just what I needed to hear... thanks.

also... shibbs.... yeah mine is attached to the the old blade on the 05 STi, rather than the arm.

thanks for the tips. I guess I will have to hit the dealership for that.
