You do realize that a Cummins has a completely different role in life, and likely would not do well in this application? They do well in industrial/emergency applications, but putting a 1200lb motor in the front end of a sports car with a redline of around 3500 rpms makes precisely squat for sense. As far as putting a 4 banger up against a V8, you're not doing yourself any favors. There is real truth to the saying "There's no replacement for displacement". Turbochargers are merely displacement adders. Did you miss the post where it was said that an LS series V8 is lighter than the engine/transmission combo of a Subaru? It's a whole lot easier to get 400hp out of an N/A LS V8 than it is to get it out of a 2.5l 4 cylinder (Hint: One of them usually comes from the factory with it). Add turbo/supercharging to the mix and it's not even close. You may want to send an email to BMW, that new V8 M3 is already obsolete. Same with the new F438 Italia from Ferrari. Make sure you CC Mercedes Benz, Maserati, Audi, Porsche, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Ford and Dodge that they're using obsolete technology. <-----Wants an obsolete Cadillac CTS-V
^ but look at some of I6 engines.... the 2JZ and the other toyota ones, nissans RB motors, a good majority of BMW motors... all of which can put down some very impressive numbers, not to mention are probably some of the most highly regarded motors in their types of cars... I think this is what he was trying to get at... not just the cummins over powerstroke and duramax stuff.. although the only diesel i'd ever get is a cummins
The inline 6 is one of the more balanced engine designs, yes. But technically the I-5 can be made just as balanced. (Who would have thought Volvo was onto something)
Oops...I misread your post Eli Still, the weight difference is going to be negligible when you factor in how it sits in the car. Combine that with the increase in power and low end torque and I'll live with the extra weight. Bubba, I'm well aware of the inline 6 cylinders from BMW, Nissan and Toyota, and I think they're phenomenal motors. The only downside to them is that they can create packaging issues (long engine needs a long engine bay ) for some cars. My favorite car that I've ever owned was an I6 ('74 Datsun 260Z) The powerband on each of these cars is going to be very, very different as well. I just take issue with the "V8s are a thing of the past" statement. And 100% agreed on the Cummins vs Powerstroke vs Duramax debate. My family has been running Cummins motors for the last 20 years and they've been phenomenal.
I'd trade my subarus for it. Then I'd sell it and build a few badass cars with the money. yea, looks hot. but I bet a trailer hitch, roof rack, and being stuck in the alley behind my house would probably ruin those looks. and those things would definitely happen if that was my only car.
Isn't anyone concerned about the government motors link, what does it say for this car that the people that made it couldn't actually run a business? Granted some good car companies couldn't make it, GM is an example of a company that did alot of things that put it in a category where they hardly deserve to be in business. I'm not saying that "all of those people" should be out of work, I'm saying that i don't want to pay for them to work and make more money than I do. V8's aren't dead, but I think it it always cool when you can take a powerplant that obiously has less power potential and make huge power. The power isn't really comparable, I can appreciate both, I think a car should be about the whole package.
LOL!!! yea I understand the stuff i may have listed are for different applications but... Inlines in general are very very well made.. the balancing they need is quiet minimal... If i need power i'd go inline, if i need speed I'd still go four banger ALL day!!! Yes BMW M3's have a twin turbo kit to make over a 1,000 HP and still keep factory warranties... I jus wanted to state a fact about the V-8's 50 years ago and the V-8 today are completely different.. and nobody needs 400RWHP they just want it...
Hey that's my old stompin' grounds... EFI Logics in Connecticut. That's Ray's SS. Here is a nice thread that was made for his car. I've seen it in person a few times, pretty mean looking! http://www.ctsubaru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7228 And my buddies also did a yellow one too, but I don't recall seeing it in person. http://www.ctsubaru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7558 ~Dan
Good find Dan, i guess that car is famous - outstanding...i like the black and red interior However, how could they forget putting in race pedals ?
No need to send BMW an e-mail for they are already one step ahead of you. The V8 M3 is going to be short lived since they are going back to 6 cylinders for 2012.
Yeah, the V10 M5 is even going to be short lived, too. BMWs new reverse-flow heads are gonna be messing up everything!
Not aftermarket Rice pedals but the ones from the factory. IMO they give better grip than those rubber ones.
I love anything that can make power, and making power with something ppl will tell you " wont ever make power" I'm a V8 guy through and through though, but can respect just about anything (other than VW or MITSU)
^^whats wrong with mitsu?? i'd take it if it were free. for that pricei'd pick up a nice used 911 turbo
