Depends on the turbo setup. you can easily over-cam a setup.

Am I going to be over-cammed while I am still using the VF turbo? :(

Oh well, that's not the end goal anyways.

From what I have read with the S1 cams and a VF39 turbo you just don't see much improvement up top because once you are high enough for the bigger cams shine, the turbo is already out of its efficiency range.
Obviously you aren't done with the build so once you go with the bigger turbo that is when the cams should be well worth the money! :)

Plus I personally like the loping idle you get with big cams and no AVCS. Sounds mean like a V8 hotrod.

Yeah, the cams aren't for the VF39. That just happens to be the configuration that will be in the car for a while.

Another long night of working on the car last night. Thanks to ofspunk7 and DanFran for the help! Here are some photos. I actually decided to pull out a real camera this time. No flash. Those new lightbulbs are working well. The front of the garage (near the doors) is still a bit dark, but we didn't really need any additional light while working on the top side of the car. Just trouble lights for working underneath.

    How the night started:

Courtesy table for watching. Also note the extra small mini-fridge to save time getting beer, haha.

5 speed is out! Front axles are out! One was quite a pain.

    Stock 5 speed. For Sale!

6 speed shifter installed. I did some quick measurements and decided that the top linkage needed to be swapped with a linkage from a GD STI (which I had purchased). So I swapped that linkage and left the rest from the 2012 STI (has Kartboy shifter and all bushings). BUT it turns out the bottom linkage is also too long. So I'm going to have to take it all back out and swap the bottom of the linkage too :(

6 speed is in! 04 STI axles are in! Quite a pain getting the axles into the tranny. Seemed even tighter than it was with the 6 speed on my 2011 WRX. Also pulled the midpipe and driveshaft. Swapped the r160 driveshaft flange for one from an r180 so that I can use an STI driveshaft.

Stock 2002 WRX motor on the stand. Need to start stripping it.

2012 STI motor waiting for parts!

Getting the one axle out, and getting the 6 speed back in took way longer than expected. We also spent some time working on ofspunk7's sister's Bugeye. So it was quite the late night, but we got a lot done!

Very slow progress. Here are updates if anyone cares.

    10/11/13:

MapDCCD and VSSPro are close to being done. Still have to wire in boost, oil pressure, and AFR gauges. Motor is pretty much ready to go in, just need to actually put it in and then finish up all the loose ends that end up taking forever Here are a couple photos from last week that I never posted.

My brother and I did a little more work. The turbo is on the motor. That's about it. Here are some photos.

    TD06SL2-GTX3071 vs. VF39
    [IMG]

^That one's a bit misleading due to perspective. Haha. Here's a more accurate one:

Turbo includes nice, multi layer gaskets and a small compressor to wastegate vacuum line.

Bolted on. Stock oil line fits great. Used the included banjo bolt and crush washers.

    Oil drain lines up well.

Looking good Ben, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the new setup runs. +1 for having a mudroom with a big utility sink...my parents have one at their house and it is very useful when working on cars.

    Sticking with stock headers?

My old house also had a laundry room right in from the door to the garage, but I was never smart enough to use it for washing my hands.

Stock collectors with GrimmSpeed crosspipe. I wasn't planning on staying stock location too long, so I didn't want to spend too much money on stuff I would just replace later, but if this turbo does well, maybe I'll stick with it.

Also changed the PS/alternator belt on my brother's car. Easy fix for a loud squeal he had.

I don't have any plots but it feels like close to 4k before it really takes off. Non-AVCS so hard to compare spool to most other setups.

Looks awesome! I will be curious what you think about the mapDCCD controller because you had the DCCDpro before correct?
I got a brand new DCCDpro that has not been installed but I didn't even know about the mapDCCD so I am kind of kicking myself because it is about the same price and the mapDCCD seem a little more powerful.

Which one was easier to install for you?

The install is fairly similar, but the MapDCCD has a socketed connector so it's much easier to get everything routed and then plug in the box at the end. The DCCDPro is all hardwired so it's a pain. The overall fit and finish and quality of the MapDCCD is just a lot higher than the DCCDPro. The interface is a lot better too. For the same price you get a lot more features than the DCCDPro. I would recommend that MapDCCD over the DCCDPro for sure.

Here's the plot of my new setup (2.5L, 6MT, TD06SL2-5371):

Top end feels strong and the plot agrees with this. Load is steady up top even though boost drops off. Car pulls hard all the way to 7k. Could try revving it further but haven't done that yet. Spool is not super early, but that is expected with cams and non-AVCS. Power comes on by around 4k so it is still a solid 3k of usable powerband.

Below is a comparison to the 2.0L with TD04 and VF39. Overall shape of the curve is similar with the larger turbo and larger motor, but the power is much higher. Little to nothing is lost on the low end of the powerband so it still feels fairly good around town but now it really takes off once you get the rev's into the 3k-4k range and above.

Note: High vehicle weight due to 4 people in the car. Compared to the other runs it is 3 additional people plus the added weight of the 6 speed. I think it should be a fairly conservative estimate but I will have to try and get a run without all the passengers at some point if I can find time.

Overall I'm very happy with the setup and the results. The turbo responds well and makes solid power for the boost that it's at. I think it could do even more with full bolt on's (EL headers, EWG, FMIC, etc) and more boost, but I'm not sure if I'll do that or just hold off here. For now I'm quite pleased with how it turned out and excited to spend some time driving it!

Nice numbers! I am jealous of your quick progress, that is pretty much my goal for power at the moment too.
I didn't see you mention fuel, is this on E85?
Are the ID2000's and FPR overkill at this point? I assume you are just planning ahead for a big turbo later but I have ID1000's and hope I can make around 400whp with E85.

The ID2000's and FPR aren't really needed at this level. You should be fine with ID1000's.

I was trying to keep it pretty minimalistic on the stock location turbo setup. I don't want to spend a bunch of money on parts that I won't be able to use with a larger setup. I'm tempted to try and max out this turbo though.

From what I remember, I thought your garage was pretty nice?

Surprised to see it spool faster with the VF39 than it did with the TD04. Did the VF39 go on with other mods, thoughts?

Yeah the bottom plot with the TD04 is bone stock. All stock parts, stock tune, pump gas.

The VF39 plot on there is with crosspipe, uppipe, downpipe, TMIC, fuel pump, injectors, E85, Nuke tune, etc.

Plots can be misleading when the power is so much higher. The VF39 definitely felt laggier than the TD04 and the new turbo is even more so.

Why did you need new studs for the DP? Did you get a different downpipe or a different turbo?

No, same stock location turbo, just rebuilt with a larger wheel. The compressor is true GTX3071R specs now.

The turbo originally came without studs, and when I sent it back for the rebuild they apparently took the studs out and kept them...

Oh haha, those bastards. Who rebuilt it for you? I might want to put a bigger compressor in my 20G.
Can't wait to see the results of that turbine/compressor combo. The EWG probably helps up top.
