Hey guys, Anyone know of a good shop that could paint my tails red with the turn and revers clear? A new place in Brooklyn park, VIP Motorsports, dunno if they are any good, charging $200 to remove old paint and apply new paint. (yes I painted them myself but didn't apply enough clear so they have started to fade...) Thanks
I would suggest having a professional do it. I know you don't think that you like vinyl... but have you checked out the 08+ hatches that have vinyl done by Flawless Front Ends? A good vinyl job will look better than paint, IMO. Faded Red Tails look like crap. http://mnsubaru.com/threads/window-tint.28588/
i'll give them a call, see what kind of deal we can work out. thanx for the suggestion. i still need to remove the paint, been using DOT 3 brake fluid.
i would suggest you get the pre-cut red film to cover the lights or go to Chris Welckle to do the layovers instead of painting the lights, you never know when you want the stock look on it again.
I agree with all of the above statements referring to Flawless Front Ends and vinyl overlays. If you have any idea as to how expensive your tail lights are, you'll go with vinyl.
Citristrip worked great on the lens , but make sure you don't get any on the housing. I finished stripping the paint, and I have dropped them off with VIP Motorsports in Brooklyn Park. I hope he does a good job with the paint. I'll post pics once he's done with them.
Citristrip left white haze on lens, but the brake fluid cleaned that up with some good rubbing. the brake fluid works on the lense and housing without damage, but takes a LONG time.
yeah....VIP Motorsports in Brooklyn Park "Building The Best And Fixing The Rest"...yeah right, they took OVER A WEEK to paint them. all he needed to do was prep surface, mask it off then paint it with candy red and clear. what did I get? 1. I got a messy masking, (I did a near perfect job and I'm not even professional) 2. Paint color wasn't even what I requested. I told them to use candy red so that it would be translucent red like 99% OEM cars are, but instead they painted it with a base red with ZERO transparency 3. there was red overspray on the housings and hardened chunks of clear coat on the housing. (proves they didn't even cover the housing when they painted it) 4. too much paint was used, enough for it to run and create droplets 5. took them over a week to make this mess. 6. service is sub par, told them to give me a call when they masked it off so I could take a look at it before they painted it and they didn't. The people aren't bad, but they don't know what they are doing. They just opened not too long ago, maybe with experience they will get better, but right now I would avoid VIP Motorsports.
I'm having them strip the paint they put on and clear coat it and I'm going to buy overlays and have our buddy down at Flawless Front Ends install them.
he have the overlays, not sure if he makes them or not. he just install them and cut to fit the lights for $80. took about 2hrs on mine, installing was the easy part, drying will need patients.
^What Ben said! Wait till you see how much work it is for him to cover them with all of those damn contours. It's well worth $40/light!
Let me get this straight... You're ok with paying a shop 200 bucks to paint (and ultimately screw up) your lights, but suddenly 80 bucks is steep for a service that several members on here have recommended and have stated looks better than a set of painted tails? Just wanted to make sure the painkillers I'm on haven't screwed with my higher level thinking functions too much. For what it's worth, Chris did my '11 tails (and most of the remaining surfaces on my car) and he does great work. I would recommend him 10 times out of 10. Solid guy and great workmanship. I can't say enough good things about him.
This! I saw Brian's 2011 DubRX last week and damn near the whole car was wrapped with clear bra...could hardly tell tho! Good job protecting your investment brotha. Your pain meds have not screwed with your higher level thinking functions...btw.
did the vinyl on my STI quite awhile back and they still look great. need a lot of patience or some one that has experience with vinyl graphics to install them. it ain't easy.
