He paid a grand in cash, and signed all the paperwork. It is quite odd isn't it? The salesman explained it to us, but I didn't really follow his reasoning. I'm wondering if he financed through the dealership, that's the only way I could understand them not letting him have the car. Anyways, it sounds like he might pick it up today. First trip will be to morries for some fresh gaskets. Hopefully we can tear into this thing soon and figure out what were working with.

IDC what the deal is he should not of left the dealer without the car if any money changed hands. Period end of story. I hope it works out for him a really do. If not well he will learn a lesson he wont forget any time soon...

Your friend is a ****ing idiot. I know it wasn't your decision and you were kinda trying to help, but telling us to be nice to him if/when he makes an account here is in vain.
People will never learn from their mistakes if you coddle them and don't tell them when they were stupid. Even if this car somehow doesn't end up blowing up quickly and ending up a nightmare, he was still very irresponsible and stupid for not getting it inspected by someone who knows, not asking for advice and just jumping into this purchase, and giving cash money to a shady dealer without getting his car.
If he financed through the dealer and had to put $1000 down on such a cheap car to get financing (at a ridiculous interest rate) he most likely isn't in a financial position to buy this rolling time bomb.

Well these fly by night, buy here pay here, ****ty little used car lots are 90% of the time a whole different level of "stealership" than the normal large OEM dealerships.
Big licensed OEM specific dealerships might sometimes have a scummy/pushy sales staff and they might try to get more money from ignorant people for stuff they don't need but generally you are getting a good product just maybe not the best value, and their service departments are usually very good quality and will do things right even if it is at a higher price.

These little ****ty corner lots are just awful though. They almost always sell terrible cars from auction that no one else wanted, barely fix them just enough to get you 10 miles from the dealer, and don't disclose major things until its too late to back out (like in OP) salvage car or flood car etc. And the worst part is their financing is predatory and borderline illegal (sometimes actually illegal). They are as bad or worse than those payday loan/cash for gold rackets. There are true stories of buy here pay here lots selling the same car 8-10 times to different people who cant keep up on the exorbitant interest rates and then the car gets repo'ed and sold again and again.

I've actually heard horror stories of "buy here pay here" lots, installing kill switches in their vehicles, that allow them to essentially make the car inoperable, if you are late/behind on payment.

This is worth watching, although it will probably just piss you off.

Oh boy. I myself did go and test drive the car. It has been posted for sale by 3 different parties in the last year. $8000 for the car when it was running but "needed a tune". $3000 or so when the engine blew. Now this stealer. I drove it around the time this guy bought it. I knew it had a salvage title from the ads before. When I drove it the engine made very little power and was REALLY laggy. The tranny thunked really badly. I would guess it needs thousands just to get it running decently. The buy will absolutely lose huge $$$ vs other cars available. I hope he likes it. It will be a lesson in car economics. And I know WRXs as I've owned over 15 of them.

LOLOLOL The new owner has been awfully quiet...I can't wait for the angry posts complaining about how ****ty Subaru's are.
I just sold my clean title 88k mile 2007 WRX limited with 20G/STI Swap and forged pistons/headstuds, fresh timing belt/waterpump etc for $13k...I bet this kid will be in more than that for this salvage title mess once its running right again hahaha.

So the motor blew while it was at one of the dealerships? And they replaced or rebuilt it? Made good power when I test drove it. Idled poor and turbo didn't sound healthy. Trans shifted fine and was quiet. @Wrxcked_ found the previous owner, and currently has the car apart to replace camshaft seals, valve cover gaskets, do the timing belt, and have me powder coat some parts. I haven't got over to do a leakdown for him yet, been busy coating, but I will post the results when I get them. Hopefully its good news, but we will see.

Motor blew before the dealership had it. It was for sale by a private party well outside the metro with the blown motor. It was likely replaced by them or before they bought it. I looked at it right as it was posted for sale by this dealership as I was hoping it was fixed and running well (it wasn't). Maybe they did some more work on it after a few people test drove it? When I drove it the tranny sounded AWEFUL. And as I was interested in the car for the 6 speed I was outta there pretty quick. Drove it for less than 1 mile before returning to the dealer. I wish the buyer well, I just know he's losing his ass moneywise because of the salvage title, but that loss will be on the resale end. If they guy enjoys the car for many years that might not matter. Hope he doesn't sink that much cash into it.
