post a video or be more descriptive. Could be anything from a heat shield to piston slap to rod knock.

I'm trying to upload a video but won't let me. The ticking noise seems to always be there. Can only hear it with radio and heat off!?

Ticking might mean that you need a valve job, a knocking could be piston slap (common for subaru's and minor cases you can't hear it after it warms up) Any car info....?? Year/Model/Miles?? History?? MOds?

It is not loud enough. Try putting the phone on the strut top or something.

If it goes away when warm its piston slap. Its a pretty common subaru quirk.

Every single Subaru I have owned (3) have all had this, including the tick, my 2.5i had the most tick, once it became louder I would change my oil and it would quiet down. It's Subaru love slapping :)

The tick is likely valves. Post a better video or swing by a meet.

The valve clearances tighten up over time (not good if they go out of spec) and get quieter (most people consider this good lol). So in short, get to know the noise(s) and learn to love them... or burn it to the ground.

In theory they should get louder with time, the valve is slamming shut/pounding the seat. This is why you get cracked/burned valves on 2.0L wrxs. Adjust your valves at 105K, but the earlier the better.

Welcome to the world of Subaru, switching from DSMs (3 of those pieces of...) to the WRX I thought my car was broken so many different times from all the weird noises/shakes I didn't have with my DSMs that I just learned to live with it...Changed oil with Schaffers 5w-30 synthetic and starting is a lot nicer from what it was when I first bought the car. Are you due for an oil change and are you running synthetic or what weight oil? That or like AWDimprezaL said about the valve lashing. No big deal. Just gotta get used to it in the cold.

When was the last oil change? Check the dipstick and let us know what the reading on it is.

Well then i suggest heading over to the Tuesday night meet at Old Chicago(Harmar) on Snelling and B2 tonight around 7pm if you can. I'm sure that someone could take a look at it there.

I haven't really heard anything abnormal from the videos, but they aren't the best quality tho.

Don't be sorry, you didn't make the crappy phones! lol. It would just be easier to diagnos in person. Just don't be too suprised if everyone says that it sounds "normal". I always get spooked when the winter starts and all of the noises start.(engine ticking, belts squeeling, etc.)
