Like the title says I'm pretty sure my axle boot is torn.. Its the passenger side front axle, I noticed it yesterday while I was putting on my mudflaps. I noticed there was grease on something directly in front of the axle boot, I looked today from above and don't notice any tears but the end of the boot is greasy. Also when I was looking from the wheel well it looked like grease was seeping out the end of the boot. Any advice/opinions on this would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks -Ryan

Maybe the clamp for the boot came off? You could buy a boot kit and take it out and reboot it. It's not hard to do just messy.

My guess is the clamp if you dont see any tears.

The clamp is on it...? And do you mean just any old boot kit or does if have to be car specific? That's probably a silly question, but I worry about that kind of thing.
Edit: I did jack it up rotate the wheel/axle to check for any tears and there are none, but the boot doesn't look to me like it is all the way on.

You can buy boot kits from pretty much any parts store and yea they have to look them up by your car make/model/year. They are normally like $10-15 and come with a new boot, clamps, and grease.

Are you pulling the axle first?

I'm assuming that will be necessary. So yes?

Ah, sounded like you were going to attempt it while it was still on the car.

Ball Joint will (probably) be half removed, so might want to replace it. Although depending on the age of the car (thanks for posting the info about your car....I'm assuming it's a Subaru, and the CVs in Subarus are all pretty much the same) removing the pinch bolt from the knuckle might open a considerable can of worms....

At the very least, inspect your tie rod end, sway bar link, brakes, and wheel bearing.

Ohh whoops that's my bad on the kind of car issue, I guess I must have assumed people knew.. Sorry.
But anyway it's all done, took a few, hours was pretty messy while actually rebooting, but not terrible.. Everything was solid that I looked at... So it went vary smooth

I'm gonna bump this instead of starting a new thread, as I basically came across the same issue this afternoon. Noticed the grease sprayed on everything and did a quick inspection underneath.

I know for sure that the right, inner boot is torn as I can feel it plain as day. I've just read a bunch of threads on various forums explaining how to repack the joints and put new boots on. However, my only concern is this: with the car up on jack stands for inspection, I was able to kinda wobble the very inner part of the axle, I think it's the axle cup that slides over the double sided driveshaft that comes out the side of the tranny. It didn't feel like it was the joint in the axle shaft, but more so where it meets the tranny.

Anybody had this issue before? I saw in only one thread that somebody mentioned replacing an oil seal inside there while you have the axle off. But I can't imagine a bad oil seal would allow the axle to wobble like that.

    Thoughts? Thanks much.

My apologies for the darkness, didn't have a light handy. But you can still see it about half way through. The driver side moves in/out ever so slightly, but not nearly as easily or as much as the pass. side. I'm guessing a little movement is normal, but probably not this much? And it's not just in/out, has a little up/down play as well, almost like a bad bearing would have.

I noticed my inner axle had quite a bit of play when I was doing my wheel bearing. Turns out my other side was the same so I think it's normal. Especially since I don't have any issues in that area of my car.
